The film has an excellent music score which has been composed by Simaab Sen and dances are choreographed by Nigah Hussain. The powerful lyrics of Gulzar adorns the music with deeper meaning and beautiful flow.

“People are fond of watching movies which provide full throttle entertainment and we realized that when Wrong No. became a success. That is when we conceptualized this movie. It provides a great dose of comedy, drama, music, dancing and of course romance with a few twists and turns thrown in for good measure,” says Yasir Nawaz.

Moor & Manto Review

In past two months I’ve seen two beautiful Pakistani movies which I can say really is a revival of Pakistani Cinema. So here are my reviews of both movies.

Moor Review:

Moor is directed by Jami who needs no introduction. Started as a music video director, he has won numerous awards for his music videos. He studied film at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in the United States. In 1998 returned to his home, Karachi and formed the production company Azadfilm.

Moor (pronounced as More, meaning Mother) is the story of Wahid, played by Hameed Sheikh, who is a railway station master at a small town in Balochistan. He is under political pressure agrees to sell the railway infrastructure under his supervision. The process may not be a win-lose situation because Wahid is also promised monetary benefits to do so.

On the other hand, Ahsan, played by Shaz Khan, who is Wahid’s son, is caught in a moral dilemma. Ahsan, who migrated to Karachi at a young age, finds himself battling against his future.

First half of the movie might be confusing cos things are happening at different time periods, at different places, at same pace while in 2nd half everything gets cleared and become interesting for the viewer. Jami captured breathtaking visuals of Balochistan. Stunning cinematography and superb performances by all actors including Hameed Sheikh, Shaz Khan, Samiya Mumtaz, Sonia Hussain and Ayaz Samoo.

Jami has worked really hard on script, casting, cinematography, soundtrack and direction.

This movie has seven tracks and all of them are produced by Strings and lyrics by Anwer Maqsood. Javed Bashir, Meesha Shafi, Rahim Shah, Strings has sung the songs for this movie and all of them are perfectly embed in the movie.

Moor is not for masala movie fans but its a treat for alternate cinema lovers and will leave its audience in awe struck with its powerful story and brilliant cinematography by Jami.

Recently Pakistan enters ‘Moor’ in Foreign-Language category for the Oscars.

Manto Review:

I watched Manto on 17th Sep. (Thu.) at Atrium Cinemas. The show starts at 4.15pm usually young people are coming with their parents, hall was almost full. Film starts with introductory song ‘Kon Hai Yeh Gustakh‘ by Javed Bashir.

Movie begins with the post partition era back in 1951 which covers his constant struggle with his life. He was disillusioned by the recent partition and bloodshed. Sarmad Khoosat who played Manto has done total justice with his character. His body language, accent, emotions… everything was perfectly crafted. In between his biography they’ve included some of his short stories ‘Khol Do‘, ‘Thanda Gosht‘. ‘Hatak‘, ‘Toba Tek Singh‘ and ‘License‘ which will give you goosebumps. The only adaptation which will make you smile is ‘Peshawar Se Lahore Tak‘ starring Mahira Khan and Azfar Rehman.

And the song ‘Kia Hoga‘ sung by Zeb Bangash and Ali Sethi makes it more beautiful.

The whole cast of the Manto was brilliant including Saba Qamar as Madam Noor Jahan, Sania Saeed as Manto’s wife, Nimra Bucha as Manto’s alter-ego, Mahira Khan & Azfar Rehman both played a very unique role where there was no dialogue.

Overall Manto is a visual treat for all the Manto fans. During all the adaptations it build up the tension as the narrative goes on and reaches up to the climatic ending which will leave the audience in shock. And that is the beauty of this movie.

Before watching this movie try to read some of the Manto’s work like Thanda Gosht, Hattak or Khol Do. So you’ll know how he writes and how much justice Sarmad Khoosat did to his adaptations.

Biopic on Olympian Hussain Shah to release on this Independence Day

SHAH, a biographical film based on the true story of the legendary Pakistani boxer Hussain Shah, is set to release in cinemas across Pakistan on Aug 13th 2015. A homeless child from the streets, Hussain Shah is the only Pakistani athlete to win an individual medal at the Olympic Games in the last 50 years, but he is soon forgotten by the nation.

This small budget, independent film is directed by debutant director Adnan Sarwar and produced under the banner of Logo Films. Adnan Sarwar plays the title role, with Kiran Chaudhary, Sardar Baloch, Adeel Raees, Faiz Chohan and Gulab Chandio in the supporting cast.

According to Adnan Sarwar, who underwent boxing training for a year to portray the role of Hussain Shah, “I lived and breathed boxing. I had to go through functional resistance training and running in the morning and boxing drills in the evening with very little intake of food. It was tough,” he said about making Shah.

Living on the streets of Lyari in Karachi, Hussain Shah went on to dominate Asian boxing for nearly a decade before becoming the first South Asian in history to win an Olympic Bronze Medal in boxing at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Within a few years of his historic achievement, Shah was forgotten by the government and media and fell back to a life of abject poverty before vanishing from the public eye completely.

The funding for the film has been provided by Bank Al-Falah, Pepsi & Samsung Mobile and it is being distributed across Pakistan by ARY Films & Footprint Entertainment.

#MoorMeetsPress The launch of Moor

I was invited to the launch event of the Moor. It is written and directed by Jami and produced by Nadeem Mandviwalla. At the event there was lots of media personals and bloggers were present.

I’ve seen the first teaser of Moor back in 2013 at the Atrium Cinemas and I was blown away by the stunning direction by Jami.

Moor Film – Teaser from azadfilm co on Vimeo.

At the beginning Jami explains his movie. He told us that the movie is about the railway system of Balochistan, especially the closure of Zhob valley railways and how it effects people of Pakistan and it is based on a true story, Moor is a tale filled with emotions bound to strike a chord with every cinema goer at some level. The plot of the movie speaks of corruption in a manner to provoke the masses to take individualistic measures to combat the social evils prevalent in our society. Then Hameed Sheikh, Abdul Qadir, Shabbir Rana and Samiya Mumtaz shared their experiences about the movie. I love how Hameed Sheikh explains Moor

After that there was a Q&A session with the press. There was a question “Why there isn’t any entertainment in the movie, like some item number ?” And Nadeem Mandviwalla replied

Another question was for Samiya “What is the difference between your role in ‘Dukhtar’ & ‘Moor’ cos they both look same?” And she replied

Then there was a question about the music of the movie and Nadeem Mandviwalla replied

And in the end Nadeem Mandviwalla told us about his favorite dialogue from the Moor which explains everything about the movie.

Moor is all set to release on 14th August 2015 while music will release after Ramadan and I just can’t wait to see the spectacular beauty of Balochistan shot by Jami. More details about the movie can be found at www.moorthefilm.com
